As it turns out, even seasoned professionals often get it wrong. Researchers at the University of Florida’s Shelter Medicine Program conducted a study where over 5,000 experts—veterinarians, trainers, groomers, and breeders—were shown photos of 100 mixed-breed dogs and asked to guess their breeds.
When the results were compared to DNA tests, many of the guesses didn’t match up.
This study confirmed something veterinarians have long known: appearances can be misleading. DNA testing remains the most accurate method for identifying a dog’s breed mix.
